Santa Clarita Pest Control Company Seeing ‘Explosion’ Of Crane Flies

A Santa Clarita pest control company is seeing an “explosion” of crane flies locally as temperatures continue to rise this spring, according to officials.

“When it warms up, all of a sudden all of those eggs hatch and all those young come out and you have a ton of activity,” said Cardon Ellis of Unipest.

Sometimes mistaken for mosquitoes, crane flies are usually much larger than mosquitoes and are often seen hovering around lights at night, according to Ellis.

“They look like oversized, massive mosquitoes,” Ellis said. “They’re actually called crane flies and they feed off of pollen.”

Also known as “mosquito eaters,” Ellis noted that there is really no truth behind the nickname.

“Everybody says, ‘Oh, don’t touch them, don’t touch them because they eat mosquitoes — they’re good,’” Ellis said. “(They have) nothing to do with mosquitoes. It’s an old wives tale.”

The Santa Clarita pest control experts at Unipest offer a variety of eco-friendly residential pest control options, in addition to organic commercial pest control services.

  1. I love Unipest! We have been using them for years. They have ALWAYS been reliable and always go the extra mile. We have been well-taken care of by them. They are very knowledgeable. I had no idea crane flies ate pollen!

  2. Crane flies are harmless. Just leave them alone. We cannot be destroying all the pollinators and the insects that are part of the food chain for our birds. We do not have to poison everything around us, for heavens sake! I don’t think much of a company that seems to be advocating destruction of harmless insects and claim that insecticides are harmless.
