Officials from the Insight teen treatment program in Santa Clarita sat down to discuss what the experience of quarantine has been like for teens.
Frederik Schulin, CEO, and Dr. Trevor Small, Director of Clinical Development, from Insight Treatment Programs went onto KHTS Radio to discuss some of the issues facing teens and their families during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“To engage with the world through a television screen versus in person has impacted [teens] in ways we could never have imagined,” said Dr. Small, Director of Clinical Development at Insight Treatment Programs.
“From a mental health perspective what we’re seeing are spikes. We’re seeing spikes in depression, in anxiety and turning to substance abuse,” said Dr. Small.
Schulin and Dr. Small went on to discuss that when families are staying home for work and school it can enhance the conflict in the family.

“We’ve never seen a time where there has been more calls and more crises out in the homes as we do right now,” Schulin said.
Dr. Small also explained that for some teens they are having a more difficult time because they can’t interact with their friends like they used to. Small things such as being unable to hug a friend can reinforce feelings of loneliness and isolation among teens.
“The most important thing is to let them know that this is a chapter in their lives; this is not the whole book,” Dr. Small said. Dr. Small said it is important for teens and their parents to know they will get through this pandemic.
Parents are now fulfilling the roles of teachers, health officials and school administrators according to officials. This can cause stress among families according to officials from the teen treatment program.
One issue raised by officials was that teens facing anxiety can feel more anxious when their parents are home and taking on more roles in the life of their teen.
Officials said that for some teens that are more introverted are not learning the skills to deal with their issues. According to Dr. Small, teens need to be in an environment of immense support that pushes them a little to work through their struggles.
Officials also said that an outpatient teen treatment program helps provide teens perspective.
According to officials, when a teen can look at their peers they are better able to work on their own mental health.
