16th Annual Child And Family Center ‘Kids Expo’ Showcases Services For Families

The Santa Clarita Child and Family Center hosted its 16th annual “Kids Expo” Sunday, featuring businesses and nonprofits in the Santa Clarita community.

Looking to bring together youth-oriented organizations and kids, Child and Family Center event organizers said the goal is to showcase services and activities around the Santa Clarita Valley.

“We wanted to do something for the community that included families, so we made it a free event for the public to come spend time with their kids, learn what the different activities in the community (are) that they can involve their children in,” said Cheryl Jones, Child and Family Center’s vice president of marketing and community outreach.

Presented with an assortment of booths filled with fun activities, children roamed around Golden Valley High’s gymnasium, playing games and winning prizes while parents spoke with vendors.

The vendors range from dentists, local hospitals and local school districts to extra-curricular activities such as martial arts and dance, most offering interactive exhibits for children to take part in.

“It’s nice because the parents of the kids can come and watch them perform, the kids can perform in front of an audience, it’s a win-win,” said Jones.

Community engagement is what the Child and Family Center and Domestic Violence Center hope to achieve with the event.

Along with raising more funds, the Child and Family Center hopes to unify youths and their families with the various organizations at the expo.

According to Jones, the Expo is a very successful fundraiser for the center, usually raising between $15,000 and $25,000 annually

The event has grown in size tremendously since the first year, quickly outgrowing their old home in the Santa Clarita Sports Complex, said Jones.

Dozens of exhibitors showcased their products or services for kids. From sports to karate, dance to art, gymnastics to books and tutors, kids and parents discovered the activities available for children in the community.

“Thank you to KHTS. They’ve always supported us, and we always appreciate it,” said Jones.

The Santa Clarita Child and Family Center offers mental health and behavioral services to over 700 children and adults each week.

The agency has grown into a provider of comprehensive prevention, early intervention, diagnostic evaluation and therapeutic services for children, teens, adults and families who live in the Santa Clarita Valley.

“Just come and have a good time! Where else can you go – that costs nothing – where you can walk around and get free goodies,” said Jones. “It’s awesome.”
