Congresswoman Katie Hill To Host Disaster Preparedness Workshop, Resource Fair

Congresswoman Katie Hill, D-Agua Dulce, is set to host a preparedness workshop and resource fair Saturday informing residents about emergency disaster relief that is available during natural disasters, officials said.

During the event, federal and local preparedness agencies and first responders are set to present best practices for safely enduring natural disasters and receiving funds from disaster relief, said Angela Giacchetti, district director for Hill.

“The workshop has been on our radar because of the year-round fire season in California,” Giacchetti said. “But when the earthquake happened, we had a district quite shaken by the experience. That is what prompted the congresswoman to push the gas to get this going.”

People in attendance are set to have the opportunity to learn and practice practical survival techniques, as well as receive advice on financial and logistical preparedness, according to officials.

During the event, those in attendance are set to hear from officials from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Red Cross and the Los Angeles County Fire and Sheriff’s Departments.

After hearing from these groups, attendees are set to be able to walk around to different tables to speak with the different organizations and ask questions, Giacchetti said.

Groups that are set to participate in the workshop include FEMA, California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES,) Los Angeles County Office of Emergency Management, Los Angeles County Fire Department, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and the American Red Cross Los Angeles Region.

This is the first workshop of this kind that Hill has put together, and she is hoping to bring similar workshops to different parts of her district within months to come, Giacchetti said.

The workshop is scheduled to take place Saturday, Aug. 10 at Canyon High School from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Canyon High School is located at 19300 Nadal Street in Canyon Country.

Registration is required and seating will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

Once pre-registration is filled, a waitlist is set to be made available online and tickets are set to be released as cancellations occur.

Those who are unable to access the online registration form may call Hill’s Palmdale office to sign up via telephone at (661) 839-0532.
