100-Gallon Fuel Spill On 5 Freeway Results In Temporary Off Ramp Closure

A 100-gallon fuel spill prompted the temporary closure of the Balboa Boulevard off-ramp from the 5 Freeway where it meets Highway 14 in the Newhall Pass Friday afternoon.

At around 3 p.m. Friday, the California Highway Patrol closed the Balboa Boulevard off-ramp on the 5 freeway in response to an estimated 100-gallon oil spill near the Highway 14 and 5 Freeway interchange in Newhall, officials said.

“We received the report at about 3 p.m. and the closure was estimated to be three hours,” said Officer Elizabeth Kravig with the California Highway Patrol. “The closure is still in effect.”

The spill occurred near Sunshine Canyon Road off of San Fernando Road just south of Newhall, according to CHP officials.

The type of fuel has not been identified, officials said.

  1. Thanks for finally reporting this! None of the radio stations, including KNX, were informing commuters about this Major traffic event. I ended up taking the 118 to the 23 to the 126 to the 5 in order to get home. I did not want to be stuck in a virtual parking lot all night long.
