Michael Shepard, 63, was identified by officials with the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner as the victim whose car crashed into a Caltrans street sweeper near Sand Canyon Road Wednesday afternoon.
Officials with the Los Angeles County Fire Department did not return calls Wednesday evening about what fire station Shepard worked at.
Shepard, an Agua Dulce resident, was declared dead at the scene shortly after 11 a.m.

Shepard’s Jeep collided with a GMC 3500, which was part of a sweeper detail, driving within the northbound center median, according to CHP Officer Josh Greengard.
The driver of the Caltrans vehicle sustained moderate injuries and was transported to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, Greengard said.
A SigAlert was issued for the HOV lane and leftmost lane of the northbound freeway until 9 p.m. while CHP investigators worked. Traffic through Santa Clarita was significantly impacted by the shutdown, as commuters tried to use surface streets to get around the lane closures.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
