Red Cross Offers Free Classes For National Preparedness Month

Amidst recent Californian wildfires that have consumed more than one million acres this summer, the Red Cross Los Angeles Region is encouraging residents to take five simple steps for disaster preparedness this September and National Preparedness Month.

The Red Cross PrepareSoCal program was designed to prepare every household for disasters such as wildfires, earthquakes and home fires. Virtual preparedness classes are being offered during the month can be accessed here.

The five steps of preparedness include getting a disaster kit, making a plan of action, being informed about what the correct actions are during and after a disaster, learn CPR and download the Red Cross Emergency app. These steps will be included in the free online class and those who complete the steps will receive a “I’m Ready” sticker pack.

“Disasters can happen any time and the number of active wildfires across our state is proof that disasters aren’t going to wait for the COVID-19 pandemic to subside,” said Joanne Nowlin, CEO of the Red Cross in Los Angeles. “During National Preparedness Month, we hope that families who may be spending a little more time at home due to the pandemic can use that time to take these important steps so you and your loved ones can react quickly if an emergency occurs.”

The Red Cross also recognized how the COVID-19 pandemic may impact disaster plans due to restrictions. The organization advises the early collection of emergency supplies as certain supplies may be limited, asking friends or relatives outside one’s area if they are able to provide shelter in the case of an emergency. Check with hotels, motels and campgrounds to see if they are open and if pets are allowed and stay informed about advice and restrictions from the state and public health authorities as it may affect emergency plans.

Governor Gavin Newsom also commented on the importance of Preparedness Month: “As Californians grapple with the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and some of the largest wildfires in state history, this Preparedness Month is a time for all of us to reflect and act on our shared responsibility to be prepared. Individuals, neighborhoods, businesses and communities can all take steps to increase their resilience and look out for one another when disaster strikes.”

Blood donations are also being encouraged by the Red Cross and can be arranged here if one is feeling well.
