Over the Fourth of July weekend, over 30 individuals were arrested by Santa Clarita law enforcement, a third of which were driving under the influence (DUI) arrests, officials said.
Starting Friday morning until Sunday evening, Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputies and California Highway Patrol Newhall officers arrested 34 individuals, which is a 28 percent decrease from last weekend, according to arrest logs from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.
Of the 34 arrested, 10 individuals were arrested for driving under the influence, 10 were for possession of a controlled substance or drug paraphernalia, and four individuals for being under the influence, according to arrest records.
Across the state, the California Highway Patrol arrested over 700 individuals for driving under the influence, according to the agency.
738 suspected impaired drivers between 6:01 p.m. Friday and 11:59 p.m. Sunday with at least 36 people were killed in crashes statewide, according to CHP officials.
“25 percent of the motor vehicle occupants killed in CHP jurisdiction were not buckled up,” said the CHP on Twitter.
In addition to the local drug and alcohol arrests, two brothers were arrested on assault with deadly weapon charges after a verbal argument turned physical.
On Friday, at around 10 a.m., deputies responded to the 28900 block of Silver Saddle Circle in Canyon Country after receiving reports of a fight in the area.
“The call stated two brothers were fighting and breaking things at the location,” said Shirley Miller, spokesperson for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.
The two parties reportedly got into a verbal argument that escalated into a physical fight, and at some point a “large metal bicycle lock” was used during the altercation.
Deputies arrested Juan and Ruben Diaz, from Canyon Country, on charges of assault with a deadly weapon, according to Miller.
All individuals arrested over the holiday weekend were transported to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station Jail, according to arrest records.
