10 Super Bowl Facts To ‘Kick-Off’ Game Day

While Santa Clarita residents prepare to watch the big game, where the Los Angeles Rams are set to go up against the New England Patriots in Atlanta, Georgia, here are 10 bits of Super Bowl Trivia to liven up the wait.

With the countdown to the 2019 kick-off well underway, KHTS offers to share some fascinating facts about the Super Bowl.

  1. The New England Patriots hold the record for most Super Bowl appearances at 11, however they have only won ‘The Big Game’ a total of 5 times.
  2. Pittsburgh Steelers hold record for most wins at 6. Out of the 32 NFL teams, the Pittsburgh franchise has won the most in: 1974, 1975, 1978, 1979, 2005 and 2008.
  3. The Rams hold one Super Bowl win to their name — bringing St. Louis to victory in 2000 against the Tennessee Titans.
  4. The coldest Super Bowl took place in New Orleans, when the Dallas Cowboys and Miami Dolphins played in 39-degree temperatures in Tulane Stadium during the 1972 match-up.
  5. There are four NFL teams that have never made it to a Super Bowl: The Detroit Lions, the Houston Texans, the Jacksonville Jaguars, and — tragically, but perhaps unsurprisingly — the Cleveland Browns.
  6. A 30-second Super Bowl ad will cost more than $5 million in 2019. That number is on-track compared to costs for the past two years, according to Ad Week. Breaking down the costs, that means that companies are paying more than $166,000 per second of airtime.
  7. The Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, the venue for Super Bowl LIII, was the first professional sports stadium in North America to be awarded LEED Platinum Certification from the United States Green Building Council.
  8. Super Bowls make up 19 of the 20 most-watched television broadcasts in the US, according to Nielsen numbers. The one outlier? The series finale of “M*A*S*H,” which aired in 1983, and was the most-watched television broadcast until 2010, holding the record for nearly 30 years.
  9. Over 1.25 billion chicken wings are likely going to be consumed Feb 3.  Along 120 million pounds of avocado, 4 million pizzas, and 50 million cases of beer, making Super Bowl Sunday the second biggest eating day of the year after Thanksgiving.
  10. The Super Bowl does not pay artists to perform during the halftime show. However the NFL does cover all expenses for the performer(s) as well as the cost of show elements such as lighting, bodyguards, and stagehands.
