If the motive is known, then detectives and the prosecution are remaining tight-lipped regarding what they know.
Little has been said in open court or by way of allegation from law enforcement officials as to what compelled David Aladana to allegedly kill someone he’s known for years.
The victim, Maximiliano Bernal, 22, also of Newhall, apparently grew up near Aladana, and the two knew each other well.
Detectives did not indicate they had a suspicion of Aladana’s involvement in a crime at the time of Aladana’s alleged confession.
He reportedly was questioned by Border Patrol officials, who then contacted the Sheriff’s Department after speaking with Aladana. It’s not clear why he was stopped by Border Patrol.
However, after being interviewed by homicide detectives on February 25, 2016, he led law enforcement officials to where Bernal’s body was found, with a bullet in his head.
Bernal was pronounced dead the same day, after his body was found at mile marker 7.98 of Sand Canyon Road, according to Los Angeles County Coroner’s records.
The scene indicated someone had shot Bernal, and then pushed them out of a car and down the canyon.
The trial is expected to take place during July or August, depending on the scheduling expected to take place in June.
Aladana faces a maximum of life in prison if convicted of the murder charge.
He’s being held in lieu of $3 million bail.
