Annual Santa Clarita Valley Family History And Genealogy Fair To Return In 2019

Valencia California Family History Center is set to host the 2019 Santa Clarita Valley Family History and Genealogy Fair on Saturday, March 23.

This free annual event is a wonderful opportunity to learn how to research and preserve one’s genealogy and family history, according to officials.

“We’re so grateful to be a part of this and work with the community and want them to feel welcome,” said Genna Rae White, director of the Family History Center. “We’re ready and waiting and we get so excited to sit and help and teach.”

Both live and video presentations from experts and professionals in family history are set to help Santa Clarita residents to discover tools and techniques for finding out more about their family trees and ancestors.

“People want to know about where they came from and they get excited about getting a sense of who they are,” White said.

The SCV Family History and Genealogy Fair aims to help amateur genealogists through a variety of resources to refine their research skills, including:

  • Discovering how to find names to add to a family tree
  • Learning new techniques to preserve family legacy
  • Finding out how to share discoveries with others
  • Being inspired with new ideas

Registration is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m., followed by a welcome and introduction ceremony at 8:30 a.m. to 8:50 a.m.

Four sessions are planned to take place throughout the day, the full schedule is available here.

White is set to present two classes herself, one on how to Writing Personal History and

Interviewing, and the other on a new tool for researching, Family History Guide.

“This is a new tool and the class teaches you how to use Family History Guide, FamilySearch, Ancestry, FindMyPast, and Heritage, and takes you step by step, through this brand new and free resource.” White said.

Box lunches are planned be available for purchase during the event at $8.00 per person, payable the day of the event (cash only). Organizers request that lunches be reserved at time of registration. There are also other food options in the nearby area, and attendees are welcome to come and go as they please.

After lunch, a panel of presenters is set to answer questions during the last session of the day ‘You have Questions, We have Answers’ from 1:20 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the chapel.

“Everybody wants to know where they came from, and it’s wonderful to have the technology that they have now and the things that we can get over the internet,” White said. “You can get good records back into 1700s if you’re lucky, and FamilySearch alone adds one million records a day from people all over the world.”

The  2019 SCV Family History and Genealogy Fair is set to take place from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, March 23 at the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints off of McBean Parkway in Valencia.
