Arts and sciences majors celebrated earning their degree from College of the Canyons (COC) at their graduation ceremony Friday evening.
This year, COC held two graduation ceremonies. The first was held on Friday morning for STEM students.
The second graduation ceremony was held Friday evening for students graduating from the Schools of Applied Technology, Humanities, Kinesiology, Social and Behavioral Sciences, and Visual and Performing Arts.
Instead of using COC’s football field, graduates received their degrees on a stage setup on COC’s Honor Grove.
2,206 total students graduated from COC as part of this year’s class. 881 of them graduated with two or more degrees.
“I know you are amazing. I’ve heard your stories and I’ve seen you in action,” said COC Chancellor Dr. Dianne G. Van Hook said during her speech. “If you don’t think you can change the world, then think again.”
914 students graduated with honors, earning a grade point average (GPA) of 3.5 or higher. 91 graduates earned a GPA of over 4.0.
“In the face of adversity, we have proven our ability to adapt and overcome,” said Valedictorian Mildred Adebowale during her speech. “My fellow graduates, go forth and follow your dreams with all your heart.”
