California Highway Patrol Officer Kenyon M. Officer Kenyon M. Youngstrom died at 37 when the driver of a jeep that he and his partner had pulled over opened fire, leaving his wife, Karen, a widow and his four children without a father.

When Alex graduated on May 6, 2016 at the Cougar Stadium in Valencia, officers from the CHP Newhall office came together to attend the graduation en masse, cheering on Alex Youngstrom as he walked across the stage.

“It’s always important to keep in contact with the family,” said CHP Newhall spokesman Joshua Greengard. “We don’t want them to think the CHP forgot about them.”

At least 30 officers attended the graduation ceremony. Several of those in attendance were among the leadership of the CHP Newhall office.

“It just shows support, shows that the CHP family is still there for him,” said Greengard. It’s a big milestone for ( Youngstrom’s) son.”

Greengard stressed that the CHP was a family not only to the officers, but their families, even after they are gone.

“His dad’s not going to be there,” he said, “but there (were) 30 officers there in support of him.”
