Over 200 aspiring football players ran, tackled and jumped Sunday at Trent Irwin’s second annual youth football camp at Cougar Stadium.
The Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver hosted the football camp for the second time as a way to give back to his hometown.
“I’m just trying to provide an atmosphere with a lot of great energy,” said Irwin. “Really just trying to bring that to a bunch of kids. Learn about adversity and life lessons in a camp where we just have some fun.”
The kids spent the day running drills in groups with coaches from the National Football League (NFL) and College Football League (CFL). The camp went on for hours, giving kids the chance to do what they love all day long.
While the camp was free for youth participants, spectators paid $5 to watch the camp, the proceeds of which go to Fostering Youth Indepence in Santa Clarita.
Irwin chose FYI, which helps foster youth who are in or have been in the system, after witnessing firsthand the struggles of foster youth.
“My little brother’s closest friend ended up being in a foster situation,” said Irwin. “So to stay at Hart High School, my mom is fostering him right now. Just seeing all he’s been through, it spoke to me to have the camp to support them.”
Last year, all proceeds were donated to Family Promise of the Santa Clarita Valley.
Prior to starting his professional career, Irwin won player of the year in the greater Los Angeles area and ranked in the top 100 prospects in California during his time at Hart High School, according to MaxPreps.com.
Irwin averaged 18.5 yards per catch across his total 285 catches, while logging a total of 5,285 yards in receiving with an average of 103.3 receiving yards per game, making him a standout prospect when he committed to Stanford as a wide receiver in 2015.
The three-time Pac-12 academic honorable mention with 152 interceptions and five touchdowns across 53 games finished off his college career making at least one catch in 40 consecutive games, according to Stanford athletics officials.
Irwin first joined the Miami Dolphins as a free agent signee, before being signed with the Bengals, his current team.
