City Council Recognizes Native American Heritage Month, Small Business Saturday

The Santa Clarita city council acknowledged Native American Heritage Month and Small Business Saturday at their regular meeting on Tuesday.

As the last meeting before the Thanksgiving holidays, the city council recognized November as Native American Heritage Month, gifting a proclamation to the Fernandeño Tataviam Band of Mission Indians.

“The City of Santa Clarita takes this time to recognize the hardships and triumphs of Native American people throughout Santa Clarita and United States history,” said Mayor Laurene Weste.

The Fernandeño Tataviam Band of Mission Indians descend from the lands that make up the city, as well as the San Fernando Valley, Antelope Valley, Simi Valley, and parts of the Angeles National Forest.

In 2019 the Fernandeño Tataviam Band of Mission Indians partnered with the Santa Clarita Public Library on an initiative that allows the public to learn more about their heritage through Yawáyro kits.

This year, the public library has extended the collaboration to include the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles to create new kits that feature additional books and items.

The Yawáyro: Indigenous Awareness & Literacy Development book kits are available at all Santa Clarita Public Libraries.

Also recognized at the meeting was Small Business Saturday, a holiday on the Saturday after Thanksgiving that encourages buying from local small businesses

According to the city, 96 percent of consumers who plan to shop on Small Business Saturday said the day inspires them to go to small, independently-owned retailers or restaurants they have not been to before.

Small business make up a large part of the economy in Santa Clarita, and with the proclamation Tuesday, the city council encourages residents to support those businesses this weekend.

  1. That would be me. I was born here as were my ancestors. I am not Indian though.

  2. Native American?!?! The first Human bones were found in East Africa, which means we’re all immigrants——
