Dr. Van Hook was sworn into office as a member of the California Community College Student Success Funding Formula Oversight Committee after being appointed by Assemblymember Christy Smith.
“It was my honor to nominate and swear-in Dr. Van Hook,” said Smith. “Her depths of knowledge, understanding of the unique mission of community colleges, and real-time administration over current funding challenges, position her to be a powerful advocate for the community college students in our district and the state.”
In 1987, Smith was Dr. Van. Hook’s student and worked with her for several years when Smith was the president of the classified employees unit at COC.
“At every point in my experience here with Dr. Van Hook, I admired her, respected her, (and) appreciated her visionary stance toward everything she undertook with the college, which took us from a campus of 2,000 students to 32,000 now,” said Smith.
Formed after Assembly Bill 1840, the committee is charged with reviewing the implementation of the new funding formula to ensure it effectively meets the needs of the state’s 2.1 million community college students, according to officials.
Dr. Van Hook is one of only 12 people selected to serve on the committee in the state of California, according to officials.
“I’m so honored,” said Dr. Van Hook. “There is very little that is more rewarding for someone who was a teacher than to be endorsed and supported by a student.”
