College Of The Canyons Board Of Trustees President Announces Bid For Re-Election

With an aim to efficiently navigate coursework and provide necessary resources to students under the circumstances caused by Los Angeles County’s Safer-At-Home order, Michelle Jenkins, the current president of the Board of Trustees at the College of the Canyons, announced her bid for re-election Thursday.

Jenkins is running for the Area No. 4 trustee position for the Santa Clarita Community College District, which only includes College of the Canyons, in the November general election.

As a long-time resident of the Santa Clarita Valley and member of the College of the Canyons Board of Trustees for over 30 years, Jenkins asserts her committed towards the continuation of serving both the college and the community, particularly now, when colleges across the country are facing the extenuating circumstances of a global pandemic and students progress in their coursework through a brand-new exclusively virtual medium, according to her campaign.

“I believe the stability and consistency of leadership that I represent on the board are critical to the college district’s performance during these very challenging times, as the Coronavirus pandemic impacts how we deliver education to our students,” said Jenkins. “No matter how we deliver classes, we must focus our work on being sure students get the best possible education.”

Jenkins has been part of the COC community since 1969, when the Santa Clarita campus first began offering classes, and graduated as a part of COC’s first-ever graduating class before transferring to UCLA to receive her B.A. in anthropology and her M.A. in counseling from the University of North Dakota.

Jenkins’s past work at the college has included leadership in opening and expanding the Canyon Country Campus, the University Center and the Academy of the Canyons.

Her priorities for the upcoming year would include the expansion of workforce development programs for the community and the development of pathways for students to obtain gainful employment, particularly during this global pandemic where unemployment rates have risen exponentially.
