A woman had finished shopping at Kohl’s on the 19300 block of Golden Valley Road around 6:15 p.m. Friday, when a man approached her with what appeared to be a gun, demanding her car.

The woman reportedly screamed and took off running, refusing to give up her keys, according to Sheriff’s Station reports.

The woman called 911, and deputies quickly were on scene and able to find a witness who pointed to where the suspect might be found. Deputies quickly found the person believed to be responsible, who was sitting in a corner of the parking lot not far from where the alleged carjacking attempt took place.

The suspect, Humberto Anaya Escamilla, 53, who’s believed to be a transient, appeared intoxicated, according to initial reports.

He led deputies on scene to the location of the gun, which apparently looked real but was actually a pellet gun. Escamilla was then taken into custody.

He’s due in court August 2 to face charges in connection with the alleged carjacking.

He’s being held in Los Angeles in lieu of $120,000 bail.
