Fireworks Prohibited, Beaches Closed In L.A. County During 4th Of July Weekend

Officials with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health announced Monday that all fireworks displays in the county would be prohibited, and that all beaches would be closed during Independence Day weekend.

From 12:01 a.m. Friday, July 3 to 5 a.m. Monday, July 6, all fireworks displays within Los Angeles County will be prohibited, and all beaches will be closed to “prevent dangerous crowding that results in the spread of deadly COVID-19.”

“Closing the beaches and prohibiting fireworks displays during this important summer holiday weekend was an incredibly difficult decision to make, but it’s the responsible decision to protect public health and protect our residents from a deadly virus,” said Dr. Barbara Ferrer, Director of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. “The Fourth of July holiday weekend typically means large crowds and gatherings to celebrate, a recipe for increased transmission of COVID-19.”

The announcement comes after officials announced Monday that more than 2,900 new cases of COVID-19 had been identified, the single largest one-day case count since the pandemic began.

“Data shows increases in people testing positive for the virus and increases in hospitalizations as a result,” a statement from the department reads. “Projections by the Department of Health Services show a marked increase in hospitalizations in the coming weeks, which could cause a surge in our healthcare system.

Monday’s updated health order does not yet apply to the city of Long Beach, which has its own health department.

As for Santa Clarita, the annual fireworks display scheduled to take place on the 4th of July is prohibited under the new order, as the City of Santa Clarita does not have its own health department, and therefore falls under the jurisdiction of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.

“We all need to take this virus more seriously and residents and business owners must do their part,” Ferrer said. “Physical distancing isn’t optional, wearing a face covering isn’t optional, spending time only with those you live with isn’t optional — these are requirements in the Health Officer Order and are the tools we have to protect each other, our families and those most vulnerable in our communities.”

A spokesperson with the City of Santa Clarita said Monday that they would be a releasing a statement with the City’s response to the new order on Tuesday morning.

  1. All the Karen’s ruined it by refusing to wear masks. They wanted the economy opened but refused to be responsible. They wanted all or nothing, so they’re getting nothing. Thanks for ruining it for the rest of us.

  2. Karen’s? I’m confused. I’d say our state officials caving into BLM and allowing “peaceful protesting” an exception to the mask and COVID rules.

    • Exactly Mile! Pretty crazy how they allow protests day after day, but we cannot watch fireworks celebrating our Independance. Newsom NEEDS to go! And, I’m so tired of people saying the “Karen’s” did this or that. Enough already people!!

  3. But BLM protests were perfectly fine!!

This has absolutely nothing to do with mask wearing or non c ok compliance because 99% of all residents are complying. This is because they are TESTING TESTING TESTING. When you look for something you find it! Can you imagine the “numbers” they would find if they tested for the yearly flu?

Had these “experts” allowed herd immunity to take over and never locked us down to begin with, this would have passed like all viruses.

  4. “Testing testing testing” does not explain increased hospitalizations. Also, I don’t know if herd immunity will happen, since I know a doctor who has been working Covid19 units in the Bay Area who knows of 2 cases where people were reinfected with Covid19 and hit harder the second time.

  5. Are there no more adults in the county capable of making there own decisions?

Thats fine, folks will take there money elsewhere and Vote with there feet.

Further alienating small business while big business and banks are filling there bellies. O yea, sorry where not essential. Ill just asume the position.

  6. Hope the City sues the County for the sunk cost of the fireworks show production. The supplies, permits and security are surely already paid for. Why should the City or its vendors take the hit? The County acted in bad faith by waiting to make this decision.

  7. So essentially you’re saying not to celebrate Freedom by taking Freedoms away including any fireworks or right to gather or protest, or right to be an adult and choose whether you want to wear a mask or not, well unless you’re BLM of course, then you can Riot, you can Loot stores, Hell you can do as you please. But just as long as you’re not celebrating Independence day or having anything family or friend related gathering.

  8. There is an increase in hospitalizations with greater increase expected. It is thought that people got careless around Memorial Day. We need to be more careful, so measures need to be taken for the sake of public health.
Why is it so hard to understand this?

  9. The SCV’ doesnt look at science..We are connected to LA, and as they grow, we will grow with cases. ECONOMY ECONOMY, no- HEALTH!!!! this is the SUBARBS, people come and go through Santa Clarita everyday!

  10. We were going to sit in our car and watch through the sunroof. It’s a shame that we can’t even do that this year. Now it seems we are having a block party!! So I’m not sure anyone cares about any more lockdowns. Just saying….

  11. I want …to go to the beach.
    I want …to see fireworks.
    I want …to go to a bar.
I want …to party with friends.
I want …to get my hair cut.
I want …to get my nails done.
I want …to go to a ball game.
I want …to see my favorite band in concert.
I want …to attend my indoor church service.
I want …to eat at my favorite restaurant.
I want …to get my kids back in school.
I want …to go back to working full time.

Then I realize we are in a world-wide health crisis unlike anything seen in our lifetime. We are still on the up-slope of the first wave with more certainly to come. We are all at risk of contracting and spreading the virus that knows no boundaries, respects no holidays, does not care about your religion nor your politics.

Having squandered our three month plus of shutdown and reopening prematurely we are now seeing new cases at an alarming rate that could grow to 100,000 daily.

The question clearly now has become: Does what we WANT outweigh what we NEED to do to survive and do we even have the will?

  13. We live in a rebellious, me centered culture. Some follow rules but many do not want to follow common sense. It’s all about them, so those who have used masks and stayed home unless they had no choice now have to suffer. We live in a lawless society. Want proof, each night we can hear the breaking of the law a thousand times over each time you hear those ear piercing fireworks go off.

  14. Ps hiett,
Thank you for the clarification. Clearly there is an effort being made to help keep businesses open and afloat, as long as they, and the rest of us, can follow healthy practices. I like Fourth of July celebrations, but I know crowds gather, so I get the need to cooperate and go without fireworks for this year. I’m not a whiny baby! And beaches are closed again for now because of the crowded sidewalks, boardwalks, parking lots, bathrooms, and spots on the sand that get filled up with beach-goers.We can cooperate with that disappointing change so we don’t get sick. Common sense.

    • Flo,
I did forget to add this one little item to my post earlier,

      COVID19.CA.GOV.
      What remains open statewide according to Dr. Barbara Ferrer public health directives yesterday;

      Stay home Q&A
The Governor has ordered Californians to obey these directives of the State Public Health Officer, and they have the same force and effect as other State Public Health Officer directives.

      Questions and answers:
      Under Protected activities,

      Question one,
CAN I ENGAGE IN POLITICAL PROTEST GATHERINGS during these directives the Governor has ordered.

      Answer,
Yes, although in-person protests present special public health concerns.
If you do wish to engage in in-person protest outside you must follow the guidelines for political protest gatherings below.
In particular, activities like chanting, shouting, singing, and group recitation negate the risk-reduction achieved through 6 feet of physical distancing. For this reason, people engaging in these activities should wear face coverings at all times.
I’m sure they will use Common sense as you say,

  15. The U.S.Constitution doesn’t allow for fireworks displays in any verbage. It does allow for peaceful protests. Maybe that explains the difference in the handling of the two. Hope I helped you with this.

  16. This is just about power and control. Live Free or Die. Enough is Enough!!!!!!!!Recall Newsom ASAP !!!!!
