Five Arrested For Domestic Violence On Valentine’s Day

Five people were arrested on Valentine’s Day for domestic violence-related charges in the Santa Clarita Valley, officials said.

Three males and two females were arrested on charges ranging from battery on a former spouse to corporal injury — a felony, according to Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station arrest records.

Among the five arrested, includes a 63-year-old man, employed by a fire department, who is charged with willfully inflicting corporal injury resulting in a traumatic condition to his spouse.

A 28-year-old female and a 41-year-old female were also both charged with felony domestic abuse charges, according to arrest logs.

Two other males were charged with battery against a former spouse, a misdemeanor, according to Sheriff’s officials.

Although there is anecdotal evidence that Valentine’s Day is connected to a spike in domestic abuse, Valentine’s Day is actually one of three days where there’s a slight decrease in reports of domestic violence, according to the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence.

But domestic violence is still a prevalent issue across the country.

Nearly 5 million people are victims of physical abuse by their partners every year, and over 38 million people in the United States have experienced physical intimate partner violence in their lifetimes, according to the National Domestic Violence Center.

To combat the issue, there are several resources in the Santa Clarita Valley for survivors of domestic violence and their families.

“We have 24-hour emergency support for survivors of domestic violence,” said Cheryl Jones, vice president of marketing and community outreach for the Child and Family Center.

The Child and Family Center took over the Santa Clarita Valley Domestic Violence Program last year and has expanded the program to include their existing services for children.

“Children are often caught in the crossfire,” said Jones. “There are services available for both the parent experiencing violence and their children.”

The Domestic Violence Program has an emergency shelter for survivors, one of which is located outside Santa Clarita, to remove the person from their aggressor, according to Jones.

The center also offers a 16-week domestic violence education and prevention course for those in the community.

For emergency 24-hour assistance, call the Child and Family Center hotline at (661) 259 – HELP (4357).
