A Celebration of Life took place at Fire Station 73 on Wednesday to celebrate the life of former Los Angeles County Firefighter Specialist Robert Klar, who passed away on Jan. 1, 2023.
Friends, family and colleagues gathered on Wednesday morning for a flag ceremony for Robert “Bob” Klar, who dedicated his life to the L.A. County Fire Department and also served in the Coast Guard.
He was also gifted when it came to fixing mechanical things, resulting in him becoming a leader at Grace Baptist Church as a handyman, helping church members in need of services.
“He was a pillar of the community,” said Kevin Klar, Robert’s son and retired L.A. County Battalion Chief.
Kevin retired after 37 years in the fire department and stated that his father heavily influenced him in his career, which began as a part of a wildland crew.
Robert was also known as being an outdoorsman, enjoying camping, hiking, scuba diving and deep sea fishing.
“Bob will be remembered for his kindness, his passion for God and his unwavering dedication to his family. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him,” officials said.
During the morning ceremony, a flag was presented to Robert’s wife Arletta Klar. Bagpipes were played as well as a trumpet player.
“It was a very gracious ceremony,” Kevin said.
Robert was born on Oct. 4, 1936, and passed away on Jan. 1, 2023.
Robert’s last assignment before his retirement was as an engineer at Fire Station 73.
