Former Hart Pitcher Off To A Blistering Start To The Season With Tampa Bay

Hart High School is no stranger to Major League Baseball. Fourteen Indians have played at the highest level of the profession, with pitchers seeming to be the most notable production of the high school in Newhall, CA.

A few years ago the Hart faithful beamed proudly as both Trevor Bauer and Mike Montgomery pitched in the 2016 World Series for the Cleveland Indians and Chicago Cubs, respectively. Bauer has carved out an impressive 8-year career (seven with the Indians) and is a mainstay in Cleveland’s rotation.

But all of a sudden, there’s a new sensation taking the league by storm this April: Tyler Glasnow. The 25-year-old right handed pitcher for the Tampa Bay Rays is 4-0 in five starts, and ranks third in MLB with a 1.53 ERA. There’s already enough funny tweets to read about Glasnow going 29-0 or 31-0. And why not have fun with it? His rise to the top of the Rays pitching staff has been swift.

Glasnow was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates out of Hart, spending 2012-2015 making his way through the minor league ranks until he was promoted to the Pirates in July of 2016. He struggled to find consistency in his 2+ seasons in Pittsburgh, and the Pirates traded him to the Rays midway through the 2018 season.

Tampa Bay immediately inserted Glasnow into the starting rotation for the remainder of the 2018 season. He pitched 55.2 innings for the Rays last year, nearly 30% of his entire career innings in MLB to that point. He finished with a 1-5 record and a 4.20 ERA, but the Rays had seen what they needed to. He is third in the rotation in 2019, and by the end of the year could push Blake Snell for the No. 1 spot on the staff.

Follow Tyler’s ascension as he continues to put together an All-Star caliber 2019 season, with the Boston Red Sox his next scheduled start on Saturday, April 27th.
