Conner Menez became the third player in The Master’s University baseball program’s history to make it to Major League Baseball when he started for the San Francisco Giants against the New York Mets on Sunday.
Menez pitched a strong five innings after receiving the call up over the weekend from Triple A Sacramento, allowing two solo homers on three hits and striking out six. He exited the game with the score 2-2, successfully keeping his team competitive. The Giants would win it with a walk-off homer in the 12th inning. They’ve won eight of their last nine games.
With the Giants suddenly back in the playoff hunt, they have sent Menez back to Sacramento (for the time being) in lieu of relief pitching help for the upcoming series against the Chicago Cubs. However, if and when they need a starting pitcher throughout the rest of the season, he proved he can be counted on.
The 24-year-old Menez was drafted in the 14th round in 2016 and has moved up the ranks quickly by traditional standards. He pitched from 2014-2016 with The Master’s University Mustangs, holding the school record for lowest career ERA at 2.26.
