Johnson, who was promoted to the rank of commander two years ago, was appointed to head the Castaic detention facility on Jan. 13, according to Sgt. Sean Walters, spokesperson for Pitchess.

“He is going to oversee the entire operation,” said Walters. “There are several different facilities here at the center.”

There are four different facilities on the property, each managed under different levels of prison security, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Pitchess is home to a “supermax” complex, which has a capacity of 3,700 inmates, according to Sheriff’s officials.

The entire property, which also includes a fire camp and a newly-constructed women’s facility, is able to hold up to 9,000 inmates.

Johnson joined the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station following his assignment in Altadena in 2014.

During his time as captain, Johnson’s public safety efforts for the station included “Scoops for Safety,” a program that awarded children with ice cream certificates for following basic safety laws, and a warning ticket system that put a bright notice on a resident’s vehicle if their doors were left unlocked.
