In the most recent addition to his “Talking Taxes” video series, Runner pays a visit to CeCe’s Cutz, a barber shop in the Natomas area of Sacramento, and goes over tax policies with small business owners.

“There a number of tax proposals making their way through the Legislature, including a sales tax on services, that would have a very real impact on working Californians and small business owners,” said Runner. “I enjoyed the opportunity to have a light-hearted, yet serious discussion on tax policy in a place where you normally wouldn’t see Republican officials.”

Extending sales tax to services could cost hair, nail and skin care businesses and their customers more than $2.3 billion in increased costs every year, according to a 2015 Board of Equalization estimate.

Though Senate Bill 640 was introduced in February by Senator Bob Hertzberg (D-Van Nuys), constituents have responded to Runner’s video and said they hadn’t heard of the proposal to tax services.

As a result, they have asked Runner to push for other elected officials to visit their businesses to get a direct look at how difficult it is to run a business in California.

“This is something I look forward to doing with other California taxpayers,” Runner said.
