“We urge community members to donate blood and help ensure that patients in local hospitals have a supply of blood ready and waiting before an emergency occurs,” said a Golden Valley High news release. “There’s no better feeling than knowing that your blood donation may give someone a second chance at life.”

While the event is scheduled to begin during normal school hours, blood drive officials are making it clear that members of the community are also able to donate alongside Golden Valley High students.

“Golden Valley’s Red Cross Club is committed to strengthening our community and helping meet hospital and patient needs through blood donations during this season of giving,” said Marisa Lucero, faculty advisor for the club. “This blood drive is our way of giving staff, colleagues and neighbors an opportunity to help save lives.”

Blood is a perishable, yet critical product for medical professionals both around the country and throughout Santa Clarita, with someone in the U.S. needing blood every two seconds, according to American Red Cross officials.

While the need for excess blood supplies remains constant throughout the year, the recent hurricanes that have hammered the east coast have not only caused an uptick in medical emergencies, but also forced the American Red Cross to cancel hundreds of blood drives throughout the states most heavily damaged by the natural disasters.

American Red Cross officials are emphasizing to the public that donors with all blood types are needed, especially those with types O negative, A negative and B negative.

The blood drive is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 21 from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the small gym at Golden Valley High School.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
