The Santa Clarita Ballet Academy will be sending another dancer to compete at the Royal Academy of Dance Genée International Competition for the second year in a row.

Alexandra “Ali” Finley, 19, graduated from Hart High School in 2015 as valedictorian and is a current Regent Scholar at UC Berkeley’s School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

“She is obviously a very dedicated student” said Santa Clarita Ballet Academy Director Corinne Glover. “She has a certain demonstration of an unusual drive and discipline… She’s a little unusual in that she can juggle both school and dance.”

In preparation for the event, Finley has split her time between a full course load at Berkeley and ballet study. Finley even flies back to Santa Clarita every other week to train at Santa Clarita Ballet Academy, but when she is unable to travel back, she trains at Berkeley Ballet Theater.

The Royal Academy of Dance Genée International Competition is set to be held in Sydney, Australia from Wednesday, Dec. 7 to Friday, Dec. 9, and is limited to the top 100 dancers in their applicant pool.

Finley has even been selected as one of 10 competitors worldwide to receive the Darcey Bussell award to help cover her travel costs.

“It’s an amazing experience, and I think she is ‘Finals’ material,” said Glover. “She’s said her dream is to dance professionally before working in engineering and computers, and knowing Ali, she probably will.”

Finley is currently in Australia preparing for the competition.
