A remake of the classic legal series, HBO’s “Perry Mason” is set to film off of Vasquez Canyon Road on Thursday and Friday, according to officials.
The new HBO series is set to star Matthew Rhys as Perry Mason, and will reportedly explore the origins of the iconic private investigator turned defense attorney.
The reimagined series is set in 1932 Los Angeles – against the backdrop of the Great Depression, a rare oil boom, the city’s hosting of the Summer Olympics and evangelical fervor – focused on a child kidnapping that has apparently gone very wrong, according to HBO officials.
Several HBO veterans have signed onto the production crew, including writers Rolin Jones and Ron Fitzgerald, who previously worked on another Santa Clarita-based production, “Weeds.”
Tim Van Patten has signed on to direct the series. An HBO mainstay, Patten previously directed the pilot for “Game of Thrones,” as well as 20 episodes of “The Sopranos” and multiple other HBO shows. He was also a writer, director and executive producer on “Boardwalk Empire.”
The scenes set to be filmed on Thursday, July 25 and Friday, July 26 include a simulated World War I battle and trench fighting, complete with simulated gunfire, flame effects, dust and smoke.
Following the filming, production crews are expected in the area between Saturday, July 27 and Saturday, August 10.
No lane closures are expected due to the filming, according to officials.
Originally aired between 1957 and 1966, “Perry Mason” was Hollywood’s first hour-long weekly series filmed for television, and has been touted one of the longest-running and most successful legal-themed television series.
In addition to the television series, 30 television movies were made between 1985 and 1995, 26 of which starred the original actor before his death.
