Las Vegas Shooting Hotel Owner MGM Reaches Deal With Victims

The Las Vegas shooting hotel owner MGM reached a deal Thursday to pay over $735 million to victims of the massacre, officials said.

The shooting, which resulted in the death of Santa Clarita resident John Phippen and injury of dozens of other local residents, occurred on Oct. 1, 2017.

Owen, Patterson & Owen, a Santa Clarita personal injury law firm, represented a few hundred of the estimated 4,300 plaintiffs in the case.

“We are grateful for our clients that they are able to get some closure two years later,” said Rick Patterson, founding partner. “This has been a very emotional experience.”

MGM’s insurers are expected to contribute a minimum of $735 million to a settlement fund. Victims’ attorneys say that depending on the number of participants, MGM could contribute more, up to $800 million, according to company legal representatives.

Tuesday marked the two-year anniversary of the Las Vegas shooting at the Route 91 Harvest music festival, the deadliest mass shooting in the history of the United States.

Included among the victims of the attack were at least 12 current or former residents of Santa Clarita. At least 11 Santa Clarita victims were wounded either directly by gunfire or by flying shrapnel, and one man, John Phippen, was killed.

Owen, Patterson & Owen filed the first lawsuit against the shooter’s estate on behalf of the Phippen family in October 2018.

“We have been in declarations since December, with formal negotiations since February,” Patterson said. “MGM and their insurance companies proceeded in good faith.”

In total, 58 people were killed and another 869 were injured, according to an official report by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.

Many residents of the Santa Clarita community were in attendance, but avoided being struck by gunfire themselves. While not physically harmed, many of them likely carry the invisible scars that such trauma can leave.

“There are so many long-term damages from this tragedy,” Patterson said. “It affects everyone around you. We are glad the victims are able to begin to move on from this.”

  1. What did they successfully sue the hotel for? Negligence?

  2. I glad the victims families are receiving something….but I’m not sure how MGM could have done anything to prevent a nut from doing this.
