Local Author Introduces Mystery Novel Based On Santa Clarita

Local Santa Clarita author and resident Gary Portillo has released a fictional mystery crime novel inspired by his own life in our Santa Clarita Valley.

“To any SCV resident, its setting of Santa Valeria is obviously Santa Clarita in a thin disguise. The novel touches on relevant issues such as race, religion, law enforcement and journalism along the way without overwhelming readers or preaching to them,” said Portillo.

Portillo’s novel, “Mysterious Destiny,” centers around a former news journalist currently working as a substitute teacher and repo man who gets caught up in a murder. It follows his mission to clear his name and solve the case, while also butting heads with an LAPD detective.

“My father was an LAPD officer and prosecutor so I was always interested in the reality of that side of work,” revealed Portillo.

There is also a romantic side to the plot as the main character navigates a budding romance.

Portillo went on to say that many of the events in the novel are derived from his own personal experience and happenings in Santa Clarita, including when his vehicle was hit by a bullet while driving on The Old Road by Magic Mountain.

“The area is presented well and I think it’s a fun, exciting and funny novel that crime/mystery readers will thoroughly enjoy,” he said.

  1. $16 for a paperback novel. Seems a little expensive to me.

  2. He writes fiction?
    City Hall will hire him.
