New Bike Lanes In Santa Clarita Being Added In Saugus, Valencia

Two new bike lanes in Santa Clarita are set to be added to two different streets in Saugus and Valencia as officials work to repave and restripe roadways, officials said.

Starting Monday and lasting for about a month, road work and restriping projects are set to add lanes for cyclists on Plum Canyon Road and Smyth Drive in both directions, according to City of Santa Clarita officials.

Recent traffic studies indicate that the addition of bike lanes on the roadway would not impact traffic circulation, according to officials.

The new bike lane on Plum Canyon Road is set to go from Bouquet Canyon Road to Steinway Street, a portion of which was recently annexed into the city with the Skyline Ranch neighborhood.

At the completion of the project, the roadway is set to include two vehicular travel lanes and one bike lane in each direction.

City documents indicate that Plum Canyon Road is set to be striped for bike lanes to connect existing bicycle facilities on Bouquet Canyon Road with those on Golden Valley Road and Skyline Ranch Road. Additionally, this portion of roadway is also set to be resurfaced with an asphalt concrete overlay, according to officials.

The new surface offers an opportunity to provide enhanced striping to best provide for current and future uses of the roadway, according to officials.

Improvements to the road are designed to enhance roadway safety while meeting current and projected traffic demand. At the same time, the addition of bike lanes are set to expand opportunities for bicycling for commuting or exercise.

A bike lane in Santa Clarita is also set to be added to Smyth Drive, between Dickason and Copper Hill Drives in Valencia, according to officials.

This section of roadway is able to accommodate new bike lanes without changing the number of travel lanes for vehicles.

Available public parking on the north side of Smyth Drive is not expected to be impacted by the addition of the bike lanes, according to City officials.

This project is part of the City of Santa Clarita’s ongoing efforts to consider the comfort and safety of all road users, including pedestrians, cyclists and transit users, officials said.

  1. Great idea. Now if we can just prevent selfish drivers who would use them to pass others in line.
Bollards had to be installed on the top end of Balboa to prevent these slimeballs from doing just that!

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
