Deputies arrested a man on a felony mayhem charge Tuesday after he allegedly assaulted someone last week in Newhall, officials said.

“On the night of Jan. 16, Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputies responded to a local hospital regarding an assault victim,” said Shirley Miller, a spokesperson for the station.
The victim, a 43-year-old male who reportedly knew the suspect, was allegedly hit with a blunt object and possibly a glass bottle, causing significant facial injuries, officials said.
The attack took place in a Newhall wash, according to officials.
Through an investigation, detectives identified the suspect as Alex Gaytan, a 33-year-old male and local transient.
Around 10 a.m. Tuesday, Crime Impact Team deputies located Gaytan in the area of Railroad Avenue and 14th Street, where he was arrested for felony mayhem.
Gaytan was transported to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station jail, where bail was set at $100,000, according to arrest records.
