“We just decided it’d be really fun to have an all-inclusive event to celebrate students’ artwork that’s not a contest; it’s just to validate kids’ work and how they see themselves as artists,” said  John Fossa, visual arts instructor for the Newhall School District.

Teachers pointed families towards their children’s artwork. Kids stared into the eyes of historical figures sketched in a portrait. Parents scoured the halls for their children’s artwork.

“For us to be able to come and participate, and actually come and see the artwork from the other kids I think is amazing,” said Aaron Plata, a parent of two Oak Hills Elementary School students who submitted art for the show.

“That way (my sons) can feel like part of a community where we can create anything that is beautiful,” Plata said.

A mural of construction paper cutouts, colored foil and painted canvas stretched across the wall, showcasing each participating student’s submission.

“Sometimes it’s the most unique pieces, sometimes it’s the most outrageous piece that just really puts together all of Mr. Fossa’s standards from art,” said McGrath Elementary School Teacher George Chavez. “Since all the different grades from all 10 or 12 schools come together, they have this beautiful tapestry of art and eclectic art from all the different schools.”

Beyond drawings, canvas and foil adorning the walls, students also expressed themselves on the stage in Newhall Elementary School’s auditorium.

Whether it was by playing a melody on the flute or doing a hopscotch-like break dance, students put the spotlight on performance art in the district.

“It’s really a great process,” said Joseph Soqui, a teacher at McGrath Elementary School. “There’s a lot of ways we can build their confidence in the classroom; it’s hard inside the classroom to build their confidence through just textbooks.”

“For this, it’s a new way, it’s hip hop, it’s dance,” Soqui said. “You’re seeing these kids who, again, were just like turtles in little shells, but they come out and their the wildest dancers and they’re having the most fun, and that just makes them happier.”
