The nonprofit, Santa Clarita Grocery, has created a drive-through program to provide food during the coronavirus outbreak.
Since November of 2018, Santa Clarita Grocery has served the community by providing weekly groceries to children, families, seniors, and veterans in need. To accommodate the outbreak of coronavirus or COVID-19, they are now in full swing with a new operation for conscientious grocery mobilization.
During the current lockdown, Santa Clarita Grocery plans to provide drive-through grocery services instead of the previous process to achieve social distancing.
From families with elementary school children on lunch programs, house-bound seniors or those recently out of work, all would be provided a week’s worth of essential grocery items brought straight to their car with minimal physical interaction.
All guests have to do is sign up and an attendant can meet them at their car with a menu and take their order. The runners then shop for the guests in the warehouse and bring their food back to them on a one-on-one basis, minimizing any risk to the best of their abilities.
Respecting all Los Angeles County mandates, all-volunteer staff members wear rubber gloves, masks and practice social distancing to ensure guests’ health is prioritized. All volunteers wash hands before, during and after serving the community.
Another aspect of Santa Clarita Grocery’s new operation is delivery service to housebound seniors due to the outbreak. Take-out delivery orders for seniors can be made by reaching out to Santa Clarita Grocery on Facebook, as well as those interested in providing volunteer delivery service.
Santa Clarita Grocery is prepared and mobilized with this new program to continue their service while staying safe and smart.
“The new drive-through grocery distribution system has been a huge success across many levels,” said Santa Clarita Grocery Director Bradley Grose. “By moving the operation out of the warehouse and into a drive-through model, there has been a 65 percent increase in volume capacity; meaning we can serve more than twice the amount of people in the same timeframe.”
Drive-through grocery distribution takes place Monday and Wednesday evenings from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday mornings from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. All produce donations are provided by local stores such as Costco, Walmart, Sprouts, Vons, Ralphs, Albertsons and Six Flags Magic Mountain.
