‘Operation Safe Shop’ Nets 10 Arrests In Valencia

Deputies arrested 10 individuals, including two out-of-state fugitives, in Valencia last week during “Operation Safe Shop,” officials said Friday.

A specialized operation was conducted in an effort to deter and prevent crimes in the city, specifically around retail establishments, said Shirley Miller, a spokesperson for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

The most recent operation focused on one of Santa Clarita’s largest shopping regions: an area encompassing nearly 200 stores bordering McBean Parkway, Valencia Boulevard and Magic Mountain Parkway.

During the operation, plain-clothed personnel, surveillance personnel, unmarked patrol cars and black and white patrol cars were all utilized to help identify crime, according to officials.

As a result of the operation, 10 people were arrested for a variety of offenses that ranged from narcotics, including heroin and methamphetamine, domestic violence, and liquor law and vehicle code violations.

Of the 10 arrests, there were also four outstanding arrest warrants cleared, Miller said.

“One traffic stop that deputies made in the area during the operation was on a Ford vehicle that resembled an ‘old police patrol car’ with no license plates,” Miller said. “Upon making contact with the two male adult occupants in the vehicle, neither one of them had identification and they told deputies they were from the Bakersfield area.”

After extensive data research, deputies discovered that both men were wanted by law enforcement, according to officials.

The driver, who allegedly didn’t have a driver’s license, had arrest warrants issued out of New Mexico and Texas, and the passenger was discovered to have had a six-count felony arrest warrant out of the state of Indiana for alleged forgery and fraud-related crimes.

“(The passenger) was additionally charged with being a fugitive from justice since he crossed states lines to avoid prosecution in Indiana, and is being held without bail,” Miller said.

Officials considered the operation so successful that station personnel are already planning to do another one. It’s a way that officials can help ensure a safe atmosphere for residents’ shopping experience and provide the highest level of service to business owners, according to officials.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
