Anna Gwinnup, a wife, mother and grandmother, was diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer in September 2017. Within weeks, it advanced to Stage 2, forcing her to undergo a double mastectomy, chemotherapy and multiple surgeries, which required blood products, according to the American Red Cross.

“I want to raise awareness about the need for blood to treat cancer,” she said.

Cancer patients may need red blood cell or platelet transfusions during chemotherapy, surgery or treatment for complications, according to the organization.

Donors of all blood types are needed to help ensure a sufficient supply for patients this season, especially after Hurricane Florence and subsequent flooding forced the cancellation of more than 6,000 blood and platelet donations last month, said the organization in a statement.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
