Republican Congressional Candidates Discuss Key Issues

All four Republican candidates challenging incumbent Congresswoman Katie Hill, D-Agua Dulce, came together Saturday morning to discuss key issues with Santa Clarita voters.

Mike Garica, Suzette Martines Valladares, Angela Underwood-Jacobs, and Mark Cripe made an appearance during the latest meeting of the Santa Clarita Republican Women Federated at The Oaks Club in Valencia Saturday morning for a candidate forum.

The forum lasted for over an hour as the candidates discussed over a dozen issues ranging from health insurance to the second amendment.

The first question asked by moderator Linder Viser, who is also the first vice president of the Santa Clarita Republican Women Federated, pertained to how each candidate would energize the base of the Republican Party in California. While each candidate had their own method on how, they all agreed that they needed to reach out to young and Latino communities.

“We can’t call it reaching out, they’re part of us,” Garcia said. “There’s families in the Antelope Valley who are conservative families. They’ve just been manipulated by a narrative from the left that makes them not want to associate themselves as Republicans.”

For the most part, the candidate agreed on many of the key issues, only differing in the exact details of how to address them.

In one instance though, Underwood-Jacobs disagreed with the three other candidates in regards to the southern border. While Garcia, Valladares, and Cripe believed that a wall from “sea-to-sea” was necessary, Underwood-Jacobs called it, “impractical.”

“We need to focus on the high-end activity areas to make sure they are heavily secured,” Underwood-Jacobs said. “We need to have countermeasures, such as electronic devices, so we can know what’s going on at the borders. We should increase the number of border patrol we have.”

The closest thing to a confrontation between candidates came when the issue of voter fraud came up. During this, Valladares said it was “concerning” that records indicated that Garcia had not voted in past elections.

“That’s something we really need to look at,” Valladares said.

Garcia said that he had voted using an absentee ballot, as he had done for years while serving the U.S. Navy, and that his votes had not been counted.

“Imagine our surprise when, as we’re running campaign, we found out my votes somehow weren’t counted,” Garcia said.

The primary is set for March of 2020, but before that Garcia is set to appear live on-air with KHTS Radio on Monday, July 22, at 10 a.m.

  1. Only Underwood-Jacobs showed a lick of understanding about the non -feasibility of a wall spanning the entire southern border. She has apparently done her homework.

Mike Garcia continues to spread his false narratives about the left. Mike, I’ve voted in every election since I became of age. I’ve placed my ballot in the box. After that, I can only hope it was counted. My question to you is exactly how you know your votes were not counted?

The first question though to any Republican is the same as I asked Mrs. Dante Acosta prior to the last election: When are you as a member of this party going to reign in this racist xenophobe who is tearing apart daily the fabric of America?
This is no longer the party of Ronald Reagan nor has it anything to do with Liincoln. Under Trump it is now the Republican Fascist Party. It’s disgusting, anti-American and I want nothing to do with it.

I so disagree with you Denny NNWofLA. A wall is needed in every single place except where the terrain serves the same purpose. Partial barriers such as Underwood-Jacobs suggests are obviously ineffective since right now illegal aliens, drug smugglers, coyotes and cartel members simply go to the end of the wall/fence and come right on in. I also am extremely tired of folks like you calling President Trump a racist xenophobe since you obviously have no clue what a race is, let alone a racist or xenophobe. So speaking for myself, not only do I not think our President needs to be “reined in” I am thankful he sees the problems and is actively working to solve them despite the unfounded attacks and name calling from your uninformed and obstructionist “side”.
