River Village Trailhead Unveiled As Latest Addition To Santa Clarita’s Paseos

Pedestrians and bicyclists passing through the trailhead, located near Bouquet Canyon Road and Newhall Avenue, now have access to a drinking fountain, bike rack and bike fix-it station. The drinking fountain even has a water bowl for pets to use.

“This trailhead would not be what it is, if not for all of our partnerships,” said Santa Clarita Mayor Cameron Smyth. “We have the bike repair station that was a direct result of a fundraising effort from the Santa Clarita bike coalition.”

The bike fix-it station has numerous tools for bicyclists to use for repairs such as adjusting fastenings on the bike’s frame or putting air into its tires.

In addition to the bike fix-it station, a fountain surrounded by picnic tables adorns the trailhead. Builders used rocks from the Santa Clara riverbed to construct the bed of the fountain.

The site is an entrance to the 11-mile-long Santa Clara River trail, stretching across Santa Clarita from Interstate 5 to Sand Canyon Road.

By Spring 2018, officials are slated to build a parking lot with seven spaces, a handicap accessible parking space and two electric vehicle parking spaces. The lot will share its entrance with the drive-thru Starbucks on Bouquet Canyon Road and Newhall Ranch Road.

“This location is really going to set the standard for future trailheads, and I think we’re going to do a revaluation of all the ones we have now,” Smyth said.

Smyth foreshadowed further revitalization of the city’s paseos.

“If we need to upgrade water stations, or if we can put a bicycle repair station, or add some tables,” the mayor said. “We’re going to look to do all of that as we evaluate all of our trailheads throughout the city.”

  1. Isn’t the correct location of this trailhead Bouquet Canyon Road and Newhall RANCH ROAD! NOT Newhall AVENUE!

  2. And to get to Sand Canyon you have to ride on Soledad. Not really a trail….

East Canyon Country with the short-end-of-the-stick; yet again.
