Santa Clarita City Council Acknowledges Hispanic Heritage Month

At the City Council meeting Tuesday, council members recognized Hispanic influence in Santa Clarita and proclaimed September as Hispanic Heritage Month.

Hispanic Heritage month runs from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, and recognizes the history, culture, and contributions of those whose ancestors come from Mexico, Spain, the Caribbeans, and Central and South America.

Bill Miranda, current council member and former CEO of the Santa Clarita Valley Latino Chamber of Commerce, recognized the special month.

“The theme of this year’s Hispanic Heritage month, as announced by the National Council of Hispanic Employment program managers, is ‘Unidos,’ [meaning] united,” Miranda said.

Upon announcing the theme of this month, Miranda commented on the importance of inclusivity and representation of people of all backgrounds and heritage.

“The theme encourages us to ensure all voices are represented and welcomed, to help build stronger communities and a stronger nation,” Miranda said.

Miranda then discussed the influence of Hispanic culture and its contribution to Santa Clarita.

“Generations of Hispanic Americans have called Santa Clarita home and have positively influenced and enriched our communities…There are many businesses in the city of Santa Clarita that are Hispanically owned,” Miranda said.

In addition to contributing to the economy and the arts, Hispanic heritage is also reflected within our own council. In 2021, Miranda became the first Latino to hold the position of mayor in our city.

Following the presentation regarding the importance Hispanic Heritage recognition, Miranda welcomed Gloria Mercado-Fortine.

Fortine has greatly contributed to the Latino communities in Santa Clarita, according to Miranda.

“I’d like to thank the city for acknowledging Hispanic Heritage Month. I grew up here and it is so wonderful to see the richness of our community and our city,” Fortine said.

“The Santa Clara River, the vital resource which runs through our city, was named by the Spaniards, and was the inspiration for our city’s name,” Miranda said.

From the very name of our city to the businesses that line our streets, Hispanic influence has greatly contributed to shaping Santa Clarita as it is today.

  1. What is Miranda doing to reduce the number of crimes committed by his “relatives” in Canyon Country? Are we simply to accept that Hispanics commit a significant disproportion of crimes in Santa Clarita?

  2. Oh man, can’t let a few bad apples spoil the bunch now Dennis. Think you missed the big picture, welcome to Los Angeles. Santa Clarita… Notice a pattern there.

  3. Get used to it. Mexico owns us, always has.

  4. Why not only melt & celebrate as one—-American! This only continues to Divide us, which is what the CCP Liberals keep doing, which fuels the Racial Divide! Wake up, not Woke up Sheeple!

  5. Taco Bell Delivered.

  6. Hispanic people are not all from Mexico. They can be Cuban, Puerto Rican, Central or South American or from Spanish speaking countries.
There’s no reason to have these distinctions divide us, as BB says it does.Instead, enjoy & celebrate accomplishments! Why not?
