The Fire Department was joined by members of the Santa Clarita City Council, Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station Captain Justin Diez and Dr. Matt Young with the Grossman Burn Center.
“The possession of illegal fireworks remains a danger for the Santa Clarita community,” said Santa Clarita Mayor Cameron Smyth. “With the Fourth of July approaching at the end of the week, many of us will be celebrating… the most common way individuals choose to celebrate is through the use of fireworks.”
Smyth asked Santa Clarita residents to “leave the fireworks to the professionals.”
David Richardson, Chief of Emergency operations for the L.A. County Fire Dept. came to warn of the dangers of fireworks, stating thousands of Americans are injured each year while handling illegal fireworks.
Between June 17 and July 17 of 2019, the L.A. County Fire Dept. responded to 76 wildfires sparked by fireworks, according to Richarson.
Fireworks can cause the loss of fingers, eyesight and cause permanent scarring, according to Dr. Matt Young from the Grossman Burn Center West Hills Hospital.
“Every year there are tragedies we see at the burn center because thousands of people are harmed by fireworks that everybody should know are dangerous,” Dr. Young said. “And there are tragedies where children die or permanently starred or go blind or lose a finger or a hand all from fireworks.”
The demonstration concluded with a sparkler being used to ignite a set of clothes and other illegal fireworks being remotely detonated to obliterate a phone book and a pair of watermelons.
“No matter the size, all fireworks remain illegal in Santa Clarita,” Smyth added.
Illegal fireworks can be reported by calling the non-emergency business line at the station 661-255-1121 or through the City’s Resident Service Center, according to Shirley Miller, spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Station.

This demonstration was LAME!! Lol I don’t do the fireworks ? ? thing but if I did this demonstration from the fire department really wouldn’t make me think twice about lighting a few rockets this year ! ?
Every summer, we have some Ya-hoo who throws cherry bombs into the wash two doors down from us. These suckers are loud, making a huge ‘KA BOOM. .Several are set off weekly during the summer. It’s been going on for YEARS now.
But I’m unable to pinpoint the exact location its coming from since it echos down the wash and throughout the surrounding neighborhoods.
I want to report this but how can I do this if I can’t pinpoint exactly where they’re coming from?
