Santa Clarita Guardians Hosts 9/11 Car Show In Honor For Fallen Soldiers

The Guardians of Santa Clarita hosted their 9/11 car show and pancake breakfast on Saturday in memorial of lost military members, as well as to honor veterans.

A variety of cars, from classic to futuristic, lined the parking lot of Higher Vision Church on the Old Road Saturday morning.

Volunteers worked to make hundreds of pancakes and sausages, cutting up donuts, bagels and fruit to serve to guests.

The community came together with Guardians, a local non-profit that provides support and mental health resources to veterans, law enforcement and firefighters, to remember those who had been lost since the Sept. 11 attacks.

“We do have to remember 9/11 every day of our lives,” said Congressman Mike Garcia. “More people have died in the wake of 9/11 fighting this two decade long war on terror.”

The event was also a way to support the veterans who are still here, as most of the guests who gathered that morning were veterans and their families.

“These are the heroes,” said Garcia in reference to the veteran crowd. “We need to be proud of what they’ve done, not ashamed.”

Guardians works to help veterans when they come home, working as a preventive program for PTSD and suicide. “When I saw the stats of suicide of our heroic veterans, up to 22 a day, I decided something needed to happen,” said Tim Traurig, the founder of Guardians. “We’re a peer-to-peer support program, where we’re all equals.”

Among the crowd of veterans was Mayor Laurene Weste, Mayor pro-tem Jason Gibbs, City Council candidate Denise Lite and Hart District Board President Joe Messina

“To be a first responder takes a certain kind of person. Strong of heart, nerves of steel, unbending will, sleepless vigilance, and a drive to protect those in need,” Gibbs said.

While this year’s event  is over, Lite is already gearing up for next year’s celebration.

“The Guardians 9/11 event  on Saturday was so special and emotional,” Lite said. “Remembering 9/11 and honoring  retired and active duty military, law enforcement and fire personnel for their fearless service is necessary and appropriate every day. They are Heros living amongst us. I was proud to sponsor that event and am already excited for next years remembrance ceremony.”

Comradery was in the air as the crowd of guests enjoyed a warm breakfast and toured the line of vintage and model cars, as well as shared their stories of service to each other.
