Parents typically want their teens to blatantly express how they’re feeling, which Jazmine noted is not going to happen 99 percent of the time.

“That’s something that we stress all the time — your kids are never going to say this to you, so … with that type of parenting you’re going to be waiting,” says Jazmine.

According to Urbina, often times parents don’t focus on what their children are feeling.

At times children may start a conversation with only the hopes of having someone to listen to them; they don’t always want someone to give advice, according to Jazmine.

Jazmine acknowledges that, in this case, when kids tell their parents a story, it is usually to give information as an update to their life. However, sometimes they are asking for advice without directly asking.

Regardless, kids tend to gage how their parents will react to similar interactions in the future based on how they react to that particular story.

Urbina suggests that parents give themselves permission to practice not fixing their children’s problems for them.

“The advice that I would give is that as a mom or dad — your job is not to fix your kid’s problems or them, and that’s sometimes a very challenging pill to swallow,” he said. “Because as parents … we don’t want them to suffer or go through heartache or heartbreak the way that we went through or experience pain, so we try to get in there and save them from that.”

According to Urbina, this is not particularly something that they want or even need because he said it robs them of valuable learning experiences.

Instead Urbina suggests that parents encourage their children by speaking into their children’s greatness to help lessen their human tendency to speak into their limitations, a lesson he gives in his book “The Inspirational Parent”.

Urbina’s new book, “The Inspirational Parent: The Magical Ingredients for Effective Parenting” is set to be released on Amazon Aug. 8.
