Santa Clarita Organization ‘Guardians’ For Veterans, First Responders To Host 9/11 Tribute

Local organization Guardians, an organization in support of retired and active duty veterans, law enforcement, and firefighters are set to hold a special fundraising event and honor the 20th anniversary of 9/11.

Guardians is a local organization in Santa Clarita that provides support, services and community events for veterans, law enforcement and firefighters, as well as their families.

“We work a lot on our mental health, physical health, spiritual health, we cover it all. It’s about learning to thrive in life, not just survive,” said founder and president Tim Traurig.

The organization serves as a response to the challenges first responders and military members face during their service, acknowledging the effects of trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder can take on these individuals.

“It’s a tough population to crack,” Traurig said.“Some of the highest rates of divorce, domestic violence, abuse and alcoholism fall under this population, so there is a big need for support.”

Guardians’ next big event is the Patriot Day Car Show and Breakfast on Sept. 11. The event aims to pay tribute to those who served and sacrificed on that day 20 years ago.

An opening ceremony is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. at Higher Vision Church with special guests, Congressman Mike Garcia, Assemblywoman Susette Valladares, City Councilman Jason Gibbs, and L.A. County Supervisor Kathryn Barger. Traurig also hinted at a special flyover during the event.

Residents and families are encouraged to take part in the free event and bring their classic cars. Donations are encouraged and can be made at the event and through their website.

Guardians provides peer-to-peer support for veterans and first responders, offering access to a  community with similar experiences and struggles. Meetings are typically held on Mondays at the forum room at Higher Vision Church, and the non-profit has recently added another meeting date on Wednesdays.

“Our saying is ‘iron sharpens iron.’ We really believe in peer-to-peer support, that we can sharpen each other,” Traurig said.

Traurig was inspired to create a peer-to-peer focused setting after his experience with his other non-profit Light of Hope that worked with youth struggling with substance abuse and trauma. Traurig witnessed firsthand the effect of peer-to-peer support and group counseling.

Monthly socials and family nights are also hosted by the organization to create connections, as well as service projects members can take part in. Outreach extends beyond the city of Santa Clarita with Guardians servicing veterans and first responders around the L.A. area.
