Santa Clarita Pursuit Suspect Charged With Evading Arrest, Grand Theft Auto

A Santa Clarita pursuit suspect was charged with multiple felonies Thursday after leading law enforcement on a 40-mile chase from the Antelope Valley, officials said.

Luis Manuel Martinez, 36, of Palmdale was booked on felony evading a police officer with disregard to safety and grand theft auto, according to Officer Josh Greengard with the California Highway Patrol Newhall Area Station.

“These charges are only the first ones the suspect has been booked with,” said Greengard. “More charges are expected as we prepare our case.”

CHP officials are now set to investigate the pursuit and present more formal charges to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

Around 6 p.m. Thursday, deputies searched the area of Bouquet Canyon Road to investigate a possible stolen vehicle.

The pursuit was initiated on Bouquet Canyon Road after deputies located the vehicle, described as a Mustang GT, according to Capt. Darren Harris with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

“The vehicle was reported stolen out of Palmdale,” said Harris. “The suspect failed to yield to deputies.”

After failing to stop for law enforcement, the suspect fled at low speeds down Bouquet Canyon Road into the Santa Clarita Valley.

Upon entering Santa Clarita, the pursuit was “handed off” to the California Highway Patrol, said Harris.

CHP officers deployed a spike strip, which took out at least one of the tires of the stolen Mustang, according to officials.

Martinez then turned on Newhall Ranch Road, where CHP officers and Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputies followed from a distance, calling off the pursuit.

The suspect drove down Newhall Ranch Road until the road turned into Highway 126 near the 5 Freeway at Castaic Junction.

Once on the 126, Martinez drove for about 10 miles, later turning around on the highway near Chiquita Canyon.

Shortly after making the U-turn on Highway 126, the suspect pulled over on the side of the road.

Martinez was taken into custody and is currently being held on $100,000 bail at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.
