Hans San Juan, a Santa Clarita resident, had a life-changing experience when a stranger donated her kidney and saved his life 10 years ago.

San Juan’s transplanted kidney recently failed two weeks shy of the operation’s 10-year anniversary.

Annamarie Rewal, San Juan’s mother, was informed after giving birth that her newborn son suffered damage to his left kidney due to complications.

When Hans was 17, he went to his doctor for a routine check-up, revealing his urine contained an excessive amount of protein.

Doctors informed his family that he would need a transplant and treatment to live a normal life without hospital visits and dialysis machines.

Angela Carole Brown answered the call in 2008 when a teenage Hans was in dire need of a kidney.

“Kidneys last about 10 years and mine rejected exactly on my 10-year anniversary. It was mind-blowing that it happened like that,” said San Juan. “I was very healthy for 10 years and never had a problem. Now I’m back on dialysis, which sucks so much.”

People with the blood type like Hans can only receive blood from donors of the same type, which makes it difficult to find a willing donor.

“My family and I are in search of an O+ or O- kidney,” said San Juan. “We created a GoFundMe account to help pay for my donor’s recovery that insurance will not cover.”

The O+ blood type can donate blood to other blood types, but can only receive blood or organs from donors with either O+ or O-.

Because of the long wait time, friends and family members are now trying to help San Juan raise funds to help support the future donor while he or she recovers from the transplant operation.

To help speed up the process, supporters have planned a benefit concert that is scheduled to take place at a cocktail bar in Santa Clarita.

Funds from the concert will go towards the donor’s testing, medical expenses and anything else not covered by insurance, according to San Juan.

San Juan and other musicians are expected to take the stage at Drifters Cocktails on Saturday, Jan. 26 from 8 p.m. until 1:30 a.m., according to organizers.

Scheduled performances include:

Dojam – 9 p.m.
DJ Bondor 9:30 p.m.
Hans San Juan – 10:15 p.m.
Pink 182 – 11 p.m.
