Santa Clarita School Closures Announced Due To Coronavirus

The coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic has prompted Santa Clarita school districts to close local schools in hopes of slowing the outbreak.

Saugus Union School District, Castaic Union School District and the Newhall School District confirmed that classes would be canceled starting Monday, March 16 until Friday, April 10, according to several emails sent March 13.

The William S. Hart Union High School District stated that all schools would transition to online “distance learning,” beginning March 16 and lasting through April 3. The following week, April 6 to April 10, is the district’s scheduled spring break, and regular classes are currently expected to resume on Monday, April 13.

Sulphur Springs Union School District also plans on changing school schedules, with more details to be announced Friday afternoon.

iLEAD schools, which runs Santa Clarita Valley International Charter School (SCVi) in Castaic and iLEAD Agua Dulce, has opted to temporarily suspend in-person instruction for an undetermined duration.

“Our team has been proactively working on a closure plan for CVOID-19 for the past few weeks. We are ready to begin providing online/virtual instruction on Monday,” said Dawn Evenson, founder and CEO of iLEAD California. “We are uniquely positioned to move to our iLEAD online curriculum which is in use already in many of our  independent study programs already”

Throughout this process, schools are continually monitoring the updates issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the World Health Organization, the California Department of Education and the California Department of Public Health.

College of the Canyons and CalArts have also suspended in-person teaching, with COC also canceling classes for two days in preparation for the transition to online teaching.

The Master’s University has opted to extend the Spring Break for another week, lasting from March 16, until March 29. Classes are currently set to resume on Monday, March 30.

Previously, several school districts had announced on Thursday a series of restrictive measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19, including canceling assemblies and school-sponsored travel, and suspending extra-curricular activities such as prom.

As of March 13, the first local case of coronavirus COVID-19 had been reported in Santa Clarita after a positive test at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital.

As of Friday morning, the district had not received confirmed evidence or official notice from public health officials about any coronavirus cases or exposure on their campuses, according to official statements.

The announcement comes on the heels of the Los Angeles Unified School District’s announcement Friday that the second-largest school district in the country would be closed for two weeks beginning Monday to prevent the spread of coronavirus COVID-19.

There is currently no vaccine to prevent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus. However, as a reminder, the CDC always recommends everyday preventive actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory diseases, including:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
  • Follow CDC’s recommendations for using a facemask.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
