Santa Clarita’s 26th Annual River Rally Draws Over 1,200 Volunteers

Santa Clarita’s 26th annual River Rally drew hundreds of volunteers from the community Saturday morning to help clean up the Santa Clara River.

The event kicked off on Saturday at 8 a.m., with volunteers signing in behind a shopping center on Soledad Canyon Road and picking up supplies for clean-up such as trash bags and gloves.

River Rally officials provided an introduction and educational briefing of the event before it’s kick off, with Mayor Bill Miranda speaking to the crowd of over 1,200 volunteers as well.

“Have fun, and let’s get to work,” said Miranda to the crowd.

Volunteers then took to the river bed to look for trash, filling multiple bags before dumping them at the dump site behind the shopping center. The clean-up of the river helps to protect species such as the California red-legged frog and California condor.

There were several booths set up for volunteers to engage with, including an Environmental Expo booth that educated volunteers on taking care of the environment and local area.

Local Santa Clarita organizations and small businesses had featured booths for volunteers to view and get information about.

Environment-themed crafts were available for participants as well and a long line could be seen at the Italian Ice booth as volunteers stopped for a treat after their work.

This year marked the city’s 26th annual River Rally Event. After last year’s rally was reduced to a more remote clean-up due to COVID-19, today’s event drew crowds eager to participate in the event. Event officials urged volunteers to follow COVID-19 safety procedures.
