SoCalGas Releases Analysis Detailing Its Role On The Road To Carbon Neutrality

The Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas) has released an analysis showing how it plans to help California reach its goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2045.

On Tuesday, Oct. 26, SoCalGas revealed an analysis called “The Role of Clean Fuels and Gas Infrastructure in Achieving California’s Net-Zero Climate Goal” plotting out ways the company can help with reducing carbon emissions in California.

“California’s goal is to reach 100% carbon neutrality by 2045 and SoCalGas will be instrumental in helping our state get there,” said a statement from SoCalGas. “We released ‘The Role of Clean Fuels and Gas Infrastructure in Achieving California’s Net-Zero Climate Goal’ – a study showing the essential role clean fuels like RNG and hydrogen can play in our energy future.”

The analysis builds on existing climate models used in studies commissioned by state agencies, and the modeling work and results were independently verified by scientists at three leading research institutions according to SoCalGas officials.

It aims to establish that in the road to carbon neutrality, electric and gas providers each have strengths and are not competitors, representatives said.

By working together, officials with SoCalGas say they can combine electrification with zero-emission fuels and carbon management to create an affordable and technologically proven, sustainable path to carbon neutrality, according to representatives.

In the study, SoCalGas also suggested that existing infrastructure used to deliver natural gas could be used to deliver clean fuels and manage carbon, helping California smoothly transition to reach 100 percent net zero goals in a more affordable and equitable way.

Representatives with SoCalGas concluded that it is vital to concentrate more energy into clean fuel initiatives now so a clean fuel network can be in place in time to reach California’s carbon neutrality goals.

Other transitions are in progress at SoCalGas to help California meet challenges associated with the changing climate, according to officials.

SoCalGas representatives said the company has begun buying 100% renewable energy to power their facilities, and they are transitioning all company vehicles to zero emission cars and trucks by 2035.

Additionally, SoCalGas aspires to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045, according to officials.
