The state released the Draft Additional Environmental Analysis in response to the two issues that the California Supreme Court stated last year that needed to be addressed for the Newhall Ranch development, a 19-square-mile property on the west side of the Santa Clarita Valley.

The courts required the amended analysis in order for the plan to move forward, asking the developer to re-assess its plans to mitigate the greenhouse gas impact and the preservation effort for the endangered unarmored threespine stickleback fish.

The environmental analysis looks at whether the revised project design and construction of proposed bridges would affect the endangered fish, and how those impacts can be mitigated.

The analysis also delved into examining whether the development would result in the revised project causing significant greenhouse gas emissions.

In conjunction with the environmental analysis release, FivePoint, a land developer company formerly known as Newhall Land and Farming Co., announced their proposal for the Newhall Ranch property to become the new hub of clean energy through the proposed homes and community.

Dubbed “Net Zero Newhall,” the proposed community would be built and result in net zero emissions of greenhouse gases in both the construction of the community, as well as the operation of it.

In the construction of 21,500 new homes, commercial buildings and other public facilities in this new community, all projects will be required to meet Zero Net Energy standards, in which to create as much energy as is used in a year.

The release of the additional analysis by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife opens the opportunity for public comment for the next 60 days.

The proposal for the Newhall Ranch development will require re-approval by authorities at the State and County levels regarding the safety of the unarmored threespine stickleback fish and the project’s greenhouse gases.

  1. Well. I guess they think they are too important to bother paying attention to the Court process, which has not been completed. I guess we’ll see if the Court feels the same way or not.

But in the meantime, this is really a joke on all of us. Most of what they are suggesting is unenforceable, so won’t reduce greenhouse gases. Are they going to give all their future residents an electric car and demand that they sign an agreement to dirive only electric if they live in Newhall Ranch? Geez. And that’s the least of the questions.

Well, leave it to Lennar to fund an expensive PR campaign. We’ll see if it succeeds.

And I notice that nothing is said about water. It is 84 degrees today in November and virtually no rain. How much more will existing residents have to cut back to accommodate 21,000 plus additional houses?

  2. Glad to see someone else doesn’t think this is a good idea
