“One thing that we think is very important is still keeping our residents involved in our local community and not letting them feel isolated from that,” said Rose. “They still play a very important role in our community.”

One way in which the assisted living center tries to keep the residents involved is by bringing in local businesses to the facility and putting on events.

“We’ve had businesses such as Peet’s Coffee come in, bring their coffee, bring their tea, do a whole tasting session for us where they introduce our residents to new coffees,” said Rose. “We’ve had Trader Joe’s come in and do wine tasting for us, we’ve had Wolf Creek Brewery come in and do beer tasting.”

Along with the local businesses, students from high schools and colleges around the area volunteer their time and put on shows for residents.

“If we had a music student working on their senior recital, they come in and do a recital,” said Rose. “Its a free audience, we love the music, they get to practice. So we’re closely connected to all the schools in the area.”

Rose explained they also get visits from “music teachers and performing arts centers that bring their students to us to do their recitals.”

Keeping the residents involved not only includes bringing the community to them, but giving them the opportunity to give back to the community as well.

“Right now we are raising money for the Alzheimer’s Association,” explained Rose. “We’ve raised money for the food pantries in the area as well. We have a crochet and knitting group that makes things for local hospitals and also to send to our soldiers overseas.”

According to Rose, the act of giving back allows residents to feel a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction knowing they were able to contribute and still be able to give back to the community.

The sense of fulfillment is important for what Summerhill Villa residents refer to as the “mind-body connection.”

“When we’re happy in our mind and we’re feeling fulfilled, it also has physical implications and we are healthier overall,” said Rose.

Summerhill Villa will be hosting an event called “Use it or Lose it” on May 26 to inform the community as to what the mind-body connection is and how it can improve their lives.

“We’re doing little workshops where anyone’s welcome to come and experience aromatherapy or zumba. Whatever it is that we’re doing for the day, we’re inviting our community in Santa Clarita to come in and experience firsthand,” said Rose.
